How to Cut the Cake
During my meeting with Alex F, he gave a short spiel on how to cut the cake properly. I never thought there was a "proper" way to do it, so it was interesting to hear him discuss.
For the curious, and others like me who didn't know there was a method to cake cutting :)
General Position:
Bride to the left of the groom with the groom cutting the cake using his right hand. Bride lays left hand over grooms hand.
(I've also read some articles where the bride cuts the cake with the groom's hand over hers)
Size of Slice:
Recommended size of slice is a wedge about 3.5 inches at the widest point. The rationale behind this is that you get to lift the cake slice without it slipping or collapsing. Plus you leave a pretty wedge shaped hollow for the photos.
Cutting the cake:
1. Remember to cut with the knife, not the server, for the quickest, cleanest cut. The cakemaker usually provides a serrated knife for cutting.
2. Stab the cake (gently gently) and then cut with the knife about30 to 40 degrees from the vertical (use short slicing up and down motions).
3. Once you have separated an edge, run the knife along the cut in order to "clean the edge of crumbs. Make sure the slice is cleanly separated from the cake.
4. Use the cake server to lift the cake to your plate.
5. Use your fork to make 2 slices, enough for a bite each.
6. Feed one another from the slice. Traditionally, the groom feeds the bride first, then the bride serves the groom.
A Sweet Extra Touch:
Serve slices to your in-laws - with the bride serving the groom's parents, then the groom serving the bride's.
Ok ba?
The things you learn when you're getting married.....
